Food Science and Nutrition

Exam Board: WJEC

This course allows students to learn about the relationship between the human body and food as well as developing practical skills linked to experimental work and the cooking and preparation of food.

Assessment

The WJEC Level 3 Diploma in Food Science and Nutrition is assessed through a combination of a written exam and external assignment set and marked by WJEC and centre marked assignments. Learners will be involved in weekly practical sessions and will build on the skills and knowledge developed at GCSE level.

All learners must take Units 1 and 2 followed by either Unit 3 or Unit 4 (school decision pending).

Unit 1- 25% Exam, 25% Coursework - Meeting the nutritional needs of specific groups

Unit 2 - 25% Coursework - Ensuring food is safe to eat

Unit 3 or 4 - 25% Internal assessment - Experimenting to solve food production problems (optional) OR Unit 4 - Current issues in food science and nutrition (optional)

Requirements

4+ in GCSE English and Science, Food Technology or Hospitality and Catering are desirable but not essential provided students are committed to the subject.

Where can it lead?

This course could lead to future careers in the food or hospitality industry, such as food product development, marketing, food factory technologist or event management. For students interested in working with people, you could consider Nutritionist, Dietician or Sport Coaching. Careers in teaching or child care provision are also options.
